1. You’re Already Using It
If you own a laptop, you already have a device that will work as an excellent e-reader. This is a great option for people who use a laptop rather than a desktop as their main daily-use computer because they are not tied down to their desk. If you take your laptop with you on trips or even just to the coffee shop, you don’t really need an additional device that’s made specifically for reading. Plus, you don’t have to learn how to use another device and bother with transferring files between your computer and the e-reader.
2. You Don’t Have to Spend More Money on Hardware
E-readers are fun and easy to use, and come with a list of cool benefits (like instant downloads and the ability to change the font size) but they are not life-necessity type of devices. Books are still available in paper form, and even if books were only available as digital products, you could still use them right on your computer. If you’re not willing to spend money on yet another electronic gizmo, you can always make use of the hardware you already own: your computer.
3. E-reading Apps Are Free
If you’re really interested in buying ebooks from the big industry leaders, you can still do so on your laptop by taking advantage of the free ebook apps that these companies provide. You can purchase ebooks from their website and download the ebook to your computer just like you would any other file, and read the ebook in their app. In addition to that, you can buy ebooks from all of the smaller independent ebook sellers and read with free e-reader software that’s available to everyone.
4. No Additional Hardware Authorizations
Using less hardware means that you will have less trouble with using your ebooks on all of your different devices. If you wish to read purchased ebook on an e-reader, usually you have to “authorize” both your computer and e-reader with the same user ID, which allows you to read the ebook both places. The more websites you download from, and the more devices you use, the more likely it is that you’ll forget your different user IDs or mix them up. This is all simpler if you’re only downloading ebooks to your laptop.
5. No Worries About It Quickly Becoming Obsolete
The ebook industry is growing fast right now, which is exciting for everyone involved with ebooks, including the end user. However, this also means that companies are quickly releasing new-and-improved versions of their e-readers in order to keep up with everyone else. You will be able to use older e-reader models for a while, but sometimes the ebook format (file type) changes or becomes obsolete, and at some point older e-readers are no longer supported by the companies who sold them or ebook websites that sell content for them. If you only read ebooks on your laptop, that’s the only device that will eventually become obsolete, and it won’t be as soon as an e-reader.
