Good news about laptop chargers
If the scheme is successful, it could mean the end of the practice were consumers are charged high prices for their Laptop Power supplies. Research has shown that some manufacturers charge in excess of £100 for selected power leads and laptop chargers which can often be as much as a third of the price of the laptop.
Acer and Asus are placed second and fifth respectively in terms of global laptop sales, which accounts for around a fifth of the market between them, so it’s clear that the manufacturers are beginning to get the message that consumers are not happy with the situation at the moment. It makes sense for users to be able to buy standardised laptop power supplies, but the manufacturers have traditionally been wary of allowing this to happen, for obvious reasons.
While the news about Acer and Asus is a step in the right direction which may eventually see laptop chargers being standardised, laptop owners would be well advised not to get too excited about the prospect of being able to buy universal laptop chargers. If you look at the mobile phone industry, manufacturers in this sector have been talking about bringing in standard chargers for years now, but so far there hasn’t been much movement towards this happening. Having said that, a European Union initiative announced last year which promised to force manufacturers to bring in standardisation may give this scheme the kick start it seems to need. If it happens in the mobile phone sector, we could see universal laptop power supplies available as well.
